Newb, in more ways than one [05 Sep 2008|08:00pm]

Hey peeps.

this may sounds kind of odd to many of you, but I've just found out I'm Jewish and it's a bit of a shock to the system.

I've always known about Jewish traditions, as I was brought up in a strict Christian family who believed in the whole of the Bible and never hid the fact that Jesus was a Jew (something many people seem to forget!!), and felt some kind of connection with the Jews which I never understood.

A few months ago my dad was looking over some of my mum's family history and the name Moses came up. We looked into it and it was a woman on my mum's mum's mum's mum's..... side who was Jewish. So according to Jewish tradition I'm Jewish, apparently.

I have to say, it was really weird to find out when you're an adult and you think you know everything about yourself. It did explain why I felt such a connection to Jewish people and why I've always felt a strong calling to go to Isreal. I've always felt like I'm being called "home", but never knew why.

OK, I sound like a nutter, but this is truly how I've felt.

Anyway, I decided to join here because I only know 2 Jewish people and they're not the most knowledgable about it because, like me, they found out about their heritage as adults. Basically, I want to learn about what it means to be a Jew and get to know Jewish people.

Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret [10 Oct 2007|06:40am]

I am working on an art project about the book "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" by Judy Blume. This book had a huge impact on my growing up Jewish, suburban and female. Did it change growing up for you? If so, please fill out this short questionnaire. If you have any questions or comments, or, if you would like a collection of excerpts to jog your memory, feel free to e-mail me at pocketsbuttons@gmail.com . thanks! -lauren

I was born and raised in Nashville, Tn. My mom is from Georgia and my dad from Miami. I am about to graduate college. phew! It's not easy to be Jewish in the south. To help me keep my faith I have been very active in my Jewish community. I was president of my Hillel in college, I've been a Religious School teacher for the last 6 years and If you have ever been to a Kesher or Caje conference in the last few years than I may have met you. I am interested in meeting new Jews. Challahr!

Hi, intro post. [14 Jul 2005|06:38pm]

Hey, my name is Megan and I just turned 21. I'm not Jewish but I've always felt this attraction toward Judaism and was always one of my favorite cultures/history/religions to study in school. Recently I've begun to consider studying it more seriously. My family is Catholic so I grew up Catholic and in Catholic schools. Out of curiosity, how do people usually feel toward people who convert? This is probably an inane or general type of question as all individuals are individuals... but are they usually happily received or no? There is probably loads more I could go on about but a quick hello for now might suffice. :) I'm happy to have joined!

Clarifications, please... [09 Aug 2004|02:04pm]

I'm getting ready to go to college in two weeks, so I went on the University's website and looked up the local synagogue (It's in a small town, so there is only one) The website said that it is Conservative, so I asked my dad what to expect (since he grew up Conservative). I have always thought that I was Reform, but my dad told me that in actuality our temple is more of a liberal conservative (haha oxymoron...) place. And he never really answered my question.

So now I am confused and maybe you girls know the answer. What makes one truly Conservative, and what makes one truly Reform? And what can I expect at a truly Conservative synagogue (just like things that every Conservative Jew knows that I may not)? Thanks girls!
